Travel dietitian salary: Pay that reflects your impact.

If you’ve heard that working as a consultant dietitian, or a travel dietitian has higher earning potential, it’s possible. This is because travel work is contract work that requires an elevated level of flexibility and adaptability from the dietitian.

Travel dietitian compensation typically combines an hourly wage with separately paid travel reimbursement. These compensation packages are designed to offset the costs of temporary assignments by blending taxable pay with reimbursements structured to be non-taxable under IRS guidelines.

In 2025, some Dietitians On Demand travel dietitians earned more than $100,000 in gross pay without overtime or sacrificing time off. Many take breaks between assignments, keep their benefits, and still earn between $80,000 and $90,000 a year.

Grow your network. Advance your career.

“One thing traveling really does — it grows your network so quickly. I could reach out to any of these [clinicians], any day. They would give me a reference, they would just chat with me. If I had a clinical question, I could call a lot of them. So, it’s truly been a very exciting experience.”

Support for dietitians, from dietitians.

Having a dedicated Regional Account Manager is a key differentiator for Dietitians On Demand. With a corporate team of dietitians on hand, our travel dietitians always feel supported. In fact, they consistently rave about our team’s communication and engagement throughout the hiring process, onboarding and as needed while working.

The support of the Regional Account Manager offers travel dietitians a sounding board, someone to vent to or get advice from, support to work through issues and a dedicated advocate for the duration of the assignment, not just in the initial hiring process. With Dietitians On Demand, travel dietitians are supported by a team fully dedicated to dietitians, many of whom are dietitians themselves.

Adventure + support.

“DOD has truly made working fun and an adventure with never-ending support. I’ve had the privilege to be able to work with multiple account managers (shoutout to Jenn and Brittany), met staff at FNCE, traveled from the east to west coast, have made lifelong connections, and I continue to grow/learn every day thanks to Dietitians On Demand.”

Travel and housing costs are covered.

In most cases, travel dietitians earn an hourly rate plus a weekly travel reimbursement. Total weekly compensation depends on the assignment location and the dietitian’s experience. Total weekly compensation is listed in the job posting. Because our consultant dietitians work as W-2 employees, Dietitians On Demand also handles payroll taxes, and liability insurance on their behalf. Plus, travelers will qualify for health insurance, dental insurance, sick pay and 401(k) with matching.

The weekly stipend is meant to help cover the real-life costs that come with working away from home. Dietitians can use it for housing, transportation to and from the assignment, scrubs, or other travel-related expenses they incur while on the job. And because travel dietitians often value flexibility, the freedom to decide how to use that stipend is a big advantage of travel work.

State licensure is simplified with our experienced team.

Getting a new state license isn’t usually a difficult process, but it can take time, and license requirements vary for each state. The best advice for dietitian state licensure is to get working on licensure as soon as you accept a position, or even while you’re in the interview process. Some clients may require a dietitian to have licensure before they’ll consider them for the role.

There’s always a fee associated with acquiring a state license, and Dietitians On Demand can reimburse for licensure on a case-by-case basis. This reimbursement ranges from partial to complete reimbursement, depending on the state and the assignment budget.

Most license applications are done online, but you may occasionally have to mail items in. After you’re licensed in one state, any additional states will want to know where you’re already licensed. To expedite the license process, it’s a great idea to keep a spreadsheet or folder with all your state licenses easily accessible, this includes license number and expiration date. CDR also offers a map of state license details.
